  • There are 6 sentences containing a subordinate clause that pairs and ablative noun with a participle. Find these sentences and circle the ablative word in the Latin, then translate the sentence and circle the translation for that ablative word in your translated sentence.
  • Translate the rest of the sentences. Underline the translation of the vocab word in your translated sentence. Challenge yourself to look up as little as possible!! This will be good practice for your final where you will be asked to translate a story.

  • Go to the Cambridge site and test your vocabulary. Set up your test so the number of words is 40, the prompt is English to Latin, and the type of test is type-in. Send me a screen shot of your score page when finished.
  • As soon as you are done with the above activity, open your textbook to the  Modestus attonitus story on pg 129. With a pencil underline all of the subjunctive phrases - there should be 9. Identify the type of phrase (look for signal words) and translate so we can discuss in class.

  • Now change the questions you wrote into indirect questions by making the verb subjunctive (imperfect or pluperfect) and adding a reporting verb (like he said, I learned, you heard, etc) to the beginning of your sentence. If you want to see an example turn to page 91 in your book, or look through the phrases you highlighted in Modestus custos.

  • First 10 minutes of class: Go to the cambridge site and test your vocabulary for stage 25. Set the test for 30 words and send me a screen shot of your results page when you finish.
  • Next 10 minutes of class: Look back at the model sentences on pgs 86-87. With a pencil underline the following phrases: In #1) "quis es?" and rogavit quis esset. In #2) "quid prope horreum facis?" and dicre nolebt quid prope horreum faceret. In #3) "quo modo eum cepisti?" nd explicavit quo modo iuvenem cepisset. In #4) "cur in castra venisti?" and ubi cognoscere non poterat cur iuvenis in castra venisset. What do you notice about these pairs of phrases?
  • Go back through the guidesheet for Modestus custos II and highlight all of the subjunctive phrases (in the Latin it is usually set apart by commas) and their translations.

  • Expand your English vocabulary: Derivatives today from your stage 23 Latin vocab checklist
  • Latin Roots for this worksheet you must first identify the Latin root contained in the numbered English derivative in the middle column. Mark the root and write the definition from your vocabulary checklist on the line. Then look at the lettered definitions in the first column. Each gives the meaning of the English derivative. Match the correct letter to the numbered word.
  • In multiple choice meanings  choose the definition of the derivative in capital letters.
  • Finally, complete this multiple activity derivative exercise 
  • Submit all three pages to dropbox, OR if you don't finish in class, print out and complete over the weekend.... VOCAB QUIZ ON MONDAY!!

  • After discuss the three participle forms that we know, go back to your story worksheet from yesterday and look over the participles you highlighted. Is everything you highlighted a participle? Did you miss any?

  • Identify the participles by circling them and drawing an arrow to the noun they modify.
  • We will discuss as a class the variety of ways to translate these participles.

  • Instructions: Print from your computer then carefully cut out the squares. You may not keep the squares you cut out. Mix up all the squares so they aren't in order, paperclip them together and give them to someone else who is finished cutting and clipping. Complete the vocab square by gluing onto construction paper or taping together. Have the original cutter check your work.

Activities for 10/26/12

  • Inscribe your own defixio using a foil tablet. You must submit your Latin text and translation to me before starting on the foil to check for grammatical and structural accuracy.
  • Your defixio must follow the general format (review the examples if you are unsure what this format is) and include: 1) the name of the offender, 2) details of their offense, 3) the god to which you are dedicating them, 4) the punishment you wish inflicted. It must be 5) written backwards. You have the option of 1) including a sketch, 2) using expressive language and detailed description, 3) adding "magical" words.
  • This project is worth 60points plus 15 extra credit points if the optional embellishments are included: Grammar/structure/vocabulary is worth 10 points for 0 mistakes>9 points for 1 mistake...etc... >0 points for 10 or more mistakes, each numbered item is worth 10 points, each optional item is worth 5 extra points.

  • In the stories of this stage we read about curse tablets (the old man, and Bulbus) and the characters are rather superstitious. Read more about magic, curses, and superstitions on pg 41-42 in your textbook and complete the word doc with short essay questions pertaining to what you read. Submit this via email or dropbox.
  • When you are finished, design your own curse tablet. We will be making these tomorrow. Check out http://curses.csad.ox.ac.uk/beginners/intro-britain.shtml for some great examples of recovered curse tablets.
